Jose Mourinho believes Real Madrid remain a Champions League threat despite their recent 4-2 defeat by his Benfica side.

Real Madrid suffered a 4-2 defeat to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League league phase on January 28, 2026, at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon. The loss means Real Madrid must now compete in the knockout phase play-offs, missing direct qualification for the Round of 16.

Benfica coach Jose Mourinho, whose team secured the dramatic victory with a late goal from goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, stated the result was "a real victory" for his side. Despite overseeing the upset, Mourinho insists Real Madrid are still strong contenders for the European title. He remarked that "Madrid and Inter Milan are teams which can win the Champions League."

Kylian Mbappé scored two goals for Real Madrid, who finished the match with nine players after Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo received red cards in stoppage time.
