Wigan Athletic have appointed Gary Caldwell as their new head coach for a second time. The club announced his return on Monday, 16 February 2026. Caldwell joins the Latics from fellow League One side Exeter City, following an agreement on compensation between the two clubs.
This marks Caldwell's second spell as manager at the Brick Community Stadium. He previously led Wigan from April 2015 to October 2016, notably guiding them to the League One title during the 2015/16 season and securing promotion back to the Championship. He also captained the club as a player, winning the FA Cup in 2013.
Wigan are currently in League One, sitting 22nd in the table, and face a relegation battle after dismissing former manager Ryan Lowe. David Perkins, who previously played for Wigan, has also returned to the club as first team coach. Caldwell had been manager of Exeter City since October 2022, establishing them as a League One side.
