Werder Bremen cancelled their scheduled trip to the United States on Friday. The club cited safety concerns following a shooting in Washington involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Per BBC Sport, the incident occurred during an immigration enforcement operation and resulted in two fatalities.
The Bundesliga side expressed worries over potential civil unrest and the safety of their travelling party. Club officials decided to abandon the tour after monitoring reports of disturbances following the shooting. According to the club, the decision ensures the protection of players and staff during the international break.
Werder Bremen had planned the visit to engage with North American supporters and participate in promotional events. It is not yet clear if the club will organise alternative fixtures within Europe. The German football league (DFL) has not commented on the cancellation. The club stated it would focus on training at its domestic facilities until the domestic season resumes.
