Southampton's Play-Off Hopes Revived After Difficult Start

Football

Southampton, after a difficult start to their Championship campaign, are now mounting a challenge for a play-off position.

Southampton began the 2025-26 Championship season with a home fixture against Wrexham on August 9th. Will Still, appointed manager before the season, was sacked on November 2nd after sixteen games, having achieved a 25 percent win ratio. Tonda Eckert took over as interim head coach, later becoming permanent on December 5th.

The club endured a "horror start", including a six-game winless run that left them 15th in the table with 33 points by early January. However, their form has since improved. As of February 10th, Southampton sit ninth in the Championship with 46 points from 32 matches.

The Saints recently secured a 4-3 victory against Leicester City on February 10th. They are currently seven points adrift of the play-off places with 16 games remaining. A supercomputer predicted in January that Southampton could still reach the play-offs, finishing fifth. The club also made squad adjustments in the winter window, with top scorer Adam Armstrong departing.
