Sheff Wed face historic February relegation

Sheffield Wednesday could become the first team in English Football League history to suffer relegation as early as February.

Sheffield Wednesday are on the brink of an unprecedented early exit from the Championship. Per BBC Sport, the club faces the possibility of being the first team in the history of the English Football League to be relegated during the month of February. Danny Rohl and his players currently sit at the bottom of the table with only 15 points from 32 matches.

Calculations show that if results go against them this weekend, their mathematical survival becomes impossible. The Owls must travel to face Hull City on Saturday, where a defeat combined with wins for rival clubs would seal their fate. The current record for the earliest relegation in the modern era is held by Derby County, who were relegated from the Premier League on 29 March 2008.

Wednesday began the season with a six-point deduction for breaching financial rules, though this was later reduced to three points on appeal. Despite this adjustment, the team has struggled to maintain form, recording only four victories throughout the entire 2025-26 campaign.
