Ramadan Breaks Confirmed for English Football

Premier League and EFL matches will again pause briefly to allow Muslim players to break their fast during the holy month.

The Premier League and English Football League (EFL) have confirmed that matches will again feature short breaks for Muslim players and officials observing Ramadan. This allows them to break their fast after sunset, as the Islamic holy month is expected to begin around 17 February and conclude by 19 March in 2026.

This procedure, established since April 2021, ensures play stops at a natural pause, such as a goal-kick, free-kick, or throw-in. Referees and team captains will coordinate before each relevant fixture to agree on the approximate timing for the stoppage. The pauses enable players to rehydrate and consume energy supplements, supporting their performance while observing their faith.

Fixtures with late afternoon or evening kick-off times, particularly Saturday 17:30 GMT and Sunday 16:30 GMT matches, are most likely to be affected by the sunset timings in the UK. The measure reflects English football's ongoing efforts to accommodate religious practices and maintain an inclusive environment.
