Phillips to 'suffer' after Sheffield United red card

Football

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says Kalvin Phillips will suffer following his dismissal in a 3-1 defeat to Southampton.

Kalvin Phillips received a red card during the first half of the Premier League match at St Mary's on Sunday. The midfielder, on loan from Manchester City, was sent off after receiving two yellow cards within seven minutes. It was his second dismissal in four appearances for the club following a previous red card against Brighton earlier this month.

Manager Chris Wilder defended his players after the match, stating he did not believe the squad was reckless despite the disciplinary record. According to BBC Sport, United have received five red cards in the Premier League this season. Wilder noted that Phillips will suffer because he wants to play and contribute to the team's battle against relegation.

Southampton secured the victory with goals from Adam Armstrong and Joe Aribo, while the visitors remain at the bottom of the table. Phillips will now serve a suspension, further limiting his opportunities to find form before the season ends. The defeat leaves the South Yorkshire club eight points from safety.
