Nigeria await FIFA ruling on World Cup qualification

Nigeria's hopes for the 2026 World Cup remain unresolved as FIFA has not yet issued a verdict on their appeal against DR Congo.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues to await a decision from FIFA regarding their protest over DR Congo's alleged fielding of ineligible players. Nigeria was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup African play-offs in November, losing to DR Congo on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The NFF formally petitioned FIFA, claiming several Congolese players did not meet eligibility criteria.

Nigeria's complaint centres on DR Congo's domestic law, which reportedly does not permit dual nationality. The NFF alleges some players, despite being cleared by FIFA based on passports, failed to formally renounce previous citizenships. However, DR Congo maintains all players were vetted and approved by FIFA.

Reports of a FIFA ruling in Nigeria's favour circulated earlier this week, but the NFF has dismissed these as false. Ademola Olajire, NFF's director of communications, confirmed FIFA has not communicated any verdict to either federation as of February 17, 2026. A successful appeal could see Nigeria replace DR Congo in the intercontinental play-offs.
