Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior reported alleged racist abuse during a Champions League match against Benfica, prompting strong condemnation.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior alleged racist abuse during Tuesday's Champions League play-off tie against Benfica in Lisbon. The match was halted for approximately ten minutes after Vinicius, who had scored the opening goal, reported the incident to referee Francois Letexier. UEFA's anti-racism protocol was activated following an exchange between Vinicius and Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni.

Real Madrid team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold described the alleged abuse as a "disgrace to football" and "disgusting", stating there is "no place for it in football or society". He added that the incident "overshadowed the performance".

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho faced criticism for his post-match comments. He suggested Vinicius's goal celebration was not "respectful" and "incited" the crowd. Mourinho also claimed "something is wrong because it happens in every stadium" where Vinicius plays. Former Real Madrid midfielder Clarence Seedorf called Mourinho's remarks a "big mistake" for appearing to justify racial abuse. Mourinho was sent off later in the game for dissent.
