Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has described the implementation of Video Assistant Referees in Scotland as a mess. His comments followed Aberdeen's 1-0 win against Motherwell in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals at Pittodrie on Wednesday night. The match featured several lengthy delays and a controversial decision to disallow a Motherwell equaliser for offside after a protracted review.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, McGinn expressed frustration with the current system. He stated that the technology is not working as intended and claimed it is sucking the life out of the game north of the border. The 31-year-old midfielder noted that while he supports the concept of VAR, the execution in the Scottish Premiership and cup competitions remains inconsistent.
Aberdeen progressed to the semi-finals thanks to a first-half goal from Bojan Miovski. However, the post-match discussion focused on the seven minutes of added time required for VAR checks. The Scottish Football Association has not yet responded to the midfielder's specific criticisms regarding the officiating standards at the match.
