Luke Matheson, aged 16, scored a dramatic equaliser for Rochdale against Manchester United in the EFL Cup third round on 25 September 2019. The match at Old Trafford finished 1-1, with United winning on penalties. Matheson, a schoolboy at the time, returned to school the following day.
In January 2020, Matheson joined Wolverhampton Wanderers for £1 million, a move that saw him loaned back to Rochdale. His time at Wolves was hampered by injuries, including a misdiagnosed hamstring issue, and he made no senior appearances for the club. He experienced several loan spells before joining Bolton Wanderers in 2023, where he also struggled for first-team action.
Matheson signed for National League North side Macclesfield in summer 2025. He is now part of their FA Cup run, which included a recent upset victory over Premier League club Crystal Palace. Macclesfield are preparing for a fourth-round tie against Brentford.
