Anthony Gordon became the first Newcastle player to score in six consecutive European matches during a 3-1 win over Qarabag.

Newcastle United defeated Qarabag 3-1 in a Champions League fixture on Wednesday. Anthony Gordon scored the opening goal at St James' Park to surpass a club record previously held by Alan Shearer. Gordon has now scored in six successive European appearances for the club, according to BBC Sport.

The forward celebrated by performing Shearer's signature one-handed goal celebration. Gordon told TNT Sports he had thought about the gesture before the match to honour the former captain. Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes added further goals to secure the victory for the home side.

Newcastle sit second in their group following the result. Manager Eddie Howe praised Gordon's consistency and work rate during the post-match press conference. The England international has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season, per Opta statistics. Qarabag remains bottom of the group with one point from four matches played. United travel to face AC Milan in their next European fixture on March 4.
