Gambling sponsorship ban looms for sports teams

The British government is considering a ban on sports sponsorship deals involving gambling firms not licensed in the United Kingdom.

Unlicensed gambling firms face a ban on sponsoring British sports teams, including Premier League clubs, as part of a government crackdown. Under the proposed measures, teams would be prohibited from entering into commercial partnerships with betting operators that do not hold a valid UK Gambling Commission licence. The move aims to strengthen regulation and improve consumer protection across professional sports.

Premier League clubs previously agreed to phase out front-of-shirt gambling sponsors by the end of the 2025-26 season. According to BBC Sport, the government intends to extend restrictions to ensure only regulated operators can advertise through kit branding and pitchside displays. A Department for Culture, Media and Sport spokesperson said the government is committed to reviewing gambling laws to make them fit for the digital age.

Several top-flight clubs currently maintain partnerships with overseas betting firms that operate via white-label agreements. Industry experts expect the new rules to impact the commercial revenue of various clubs and sporting bodies. The government will consult with sports organisations before finalizing the legislation.
