Docherty Returns to Aberdeen as Dons Seek New Boss

Football

Tony Docherty has rejoined Aberdeen to support interim manager Peter Leven, with a permanent head coach announcement expected imminently.

Former assistant manager Tony Docherty, 55, has returned to Aberdeen to bolster Peter Leven's interim management team. Docherty previously served the club for eight years from 2013 to 2021 as Derek McInnes' assistant. He will now provide support during this transitional period.

Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel confirmed the search for a permanent head coach is "reaching its conclusion". He added that an announcement is expected "imminently". Peter Leven has been in interim charge for five weeks, following Jimmy Thelin's departure on January 4.

Eirik Horneland is reportedly the preferred candidate for the role and has held discussions with the club. Aberdeen currently sit seventh in the Premiership. Recent postponements due to wet weather have created a congested fixture schedule for the team.
