Football

Burnley have condemned online racist abuse directed at midfielder Hannibal Mejbri following Saturday's Premier League match at Chelsea.

The Lancashire club issued a statement saying it was disgusted by the messages sent to the Tunisia international. Mejbri, who joined Burnley from Manchester United in 2024, was targeted on social media after the fixture at Stamford Bridge. Burnley officials confirmed the club is working with the Premier League and relevant authorities to identify those responsible.

According to BBC Sport, the club has offered its full support to the 23-year-old midfielder. The Premier League reiterated its zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind. A spokesperson for the league stated that it would support Burnley and the police in their investigation into the matter.

Chelsea also released a statement confirming they would assist with enquiries and ban any of their supporters found to be involved. This incident follows a series of recent campaigns by football authorities aimed at removing online hate from the game. No arrests have been made at this stage, per reports from local law enforcement.
